Highlights of your life since graduation:
U of Illinois AB 1964, MD 1968. Married Barbara Jacobs 1969. I trained in surgery and practiced as an academic surgeon and department head for 25 years at Hennepin County Medical Center and U of Minnesota. In 1994 I had to give up surgery after I lost most of my vision from complications of glaucoma. I stayed in Minneapolis and took a job as CEO of our faculty medical practice for 7 years, then retired to Florida where I wrote Fatal Injection and enjoyed a late career as a somewhat mediocre medical fiction writer. I am now fully retired (sort of). My wife died earlier this year, and I have been spending more time with my children and grandchildren in Boston and New Jersey. I still live in Naples, FL. |

Highlights of your life since graduation:
B. A., Government and International Relations (1965), Carleton College; M.A. (1968) and PhD (1975) Political Science, University of Chicago. I taught at colleges and universities in New York, Illinois and North Carolina from 1972 to 1997. I took a year’s sabbatical in 1981-82 to earn an M.A. in Cinema Studies at New York University and later taught film art and film history as well as political science. I was a film reviewer for a local weekly for 19 years (a dubious privilege which allowed me to see and write about an extraordinary number of bad movies along with some great ones). I wrote magazine articles, advertising copy, six Young Adult biographies and a work of film history, SHOWDOWN AT HIGH NOON. I’ve been married twice--the second, and very happy, time to a lovely Southern lady. She grins when she serves me grits; I get even by buying lox every once in a while. |
|
Memories or anything else you'd like to share: I was always kind of an outsider at South Shore, but I knew we were getting a good education. Miss Annan, whom many of you remember fondly, terrorized me with her “chicken feet,” though we eventually reached a compromise of sorts: I would joke, she would suppress a smile, and all was O.K. until the next paper suffered demolition by red pencil. |
