UC Berkeley in the 60s was everything it was cracked up to be. Then I returned to Chicago for medical school at Loyola; I spent the bulk of my last year last year of med school in SF where I met my wife-to-be, Karen Sherber (who knew Steve Tiersky at Wash U). After an internship at Michael Reese, I completed a Residency in Psychiatry at Harvard/MGH. We got stationed in El Paso for my 2 years in the Army, where I learned that winters could include tennis in the sun. Therefore, I took my first academic position running an outpatient department and medical student teaching program at a brand new medical school, the University of Texas at Houston. In 1981, we relocated to UC San Diego where I joined Steve Shuchter for outpatient teaching, clinical work and research on bereavement and depression. Later, I became Residency Training Director at UCSD and continue to run a teaching program and dabble in research on depression, bereavement and suicide prevention. Karen and I have 3 children: Stephanie (a Psychiatrist and mother of 2 beautiful girls, Alexis and Samantha, with one more on the way), Daniel (a Medical Informatics Specialist and father of 2 handsome young men, Keaton and Wyatt) and Rebecca (a teacher/psychologist who has our oldest grandson, Sam, and our youngest granddaughter, Sarah - obviously also handsome and beautiful). Karen is retired from schoolroom teaching, but still tutors from our home. I have no plans for retirement myself, but do look forward to resuming my soccer and baseball coaching ‘careers’ when the grandchildren get a tad older.
Loved South Shore, had great friends and enduring memories of PALS. I have never been in a more competitive academic environment. I join several others in highlighting the incredible teaching and mentorship of Miss Annon. I've got a scheduling conflict and won't be able to make it to the reunion. My loss!

I went to U of I, I have a BA in English (thank you Ms. Annan!). Nov '63 I married Loren Kramer (SSHS'59) and we are still married! We have lived in Highland Park since 1966. Our son, Andrew ('65) is an expert in food marketing and is married to Susie Libman who is an Ob-Gyn. They have two children, Jackson ('97) and Kate ('01). The best part is that they live 1 mile from us. Our daughter, Laura ('68) lived in Italy for 15 years and established our business, Custom Tours in Tuscany. I still run the business, but she now lives in Chicago with her partner Brian and their German Shepherd Daphny.

Working as a Stewardess for Northwest airlines for 35 years was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the world I live in.
I enjoyed golfing and was 9 holer champion for two years and now I am enjoying watercolor painting and taking cruises with friends. Going to the Great Barrier Reef and snorkeling with the fish; seeing the Great Wall of China and going to South Africa for a month and seeing the beautiful wildlife were awesome as was taking a train trip recently from Seattle to Los Angeles. I also just met my Great Grandson Maisen who is a bundle of joy. I love doing charity work with a group of retired Flight Attendants and we raised $25,000 this year for Seeing Eye Dogs. I love taking pictures of sunsets and sunrises and still am in shock that all these years have gone so fast. I am very fortunate to have wonderful friends and family who care and are loving people in my life. I have had two husband pass away which is very difficult. I decided that just because my name is Alona I didn't have to be alone and so I continue to try to help others who are not as fortunate and to give thanks everyday for how fortunate I am. I enjoy living in Palm Desert California and lived in Seattle for 32years. Palm Desert is a beautiful place to retire and there is so much to do here. I have lots of company in the Winter and even some visitors in the summer. Life is good and going to quickly that is for sure. |

I attended the University of Illinois first at the Navy Pier Campus for two years and earned my Bachelor of Science degree from the Champaign, Illinois campus in 1965 with a Major in P.E. I was hired by Evergreen Park Community High School, (EPCHS) located in Evergreen Park, IL. In 1970 I earned a Masters of Arts degree in P.E. from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. I taught P.E., Driver Ed. and some Health at EPCHS for 40 years retiring in May, 2005.
I loved playing the role of "Miss Lynch" in EPCHS's production of "Grease" in March, 2006. Pauline Peterson Lussenhop and Joanie Karlin Dorman from our SSHS class of "61 were there to see me on stage. What a HOOT!!! Best part of retiring: NO ALARM CLOCK in the morning. I workout at Cardinal Fitness regularly and look forward to enjoying the harvest I get from my grape tomatoe plants that I've been growing in my garden every summer. LIFE IS GOOD!!! Favorite memories: My friends and fellow Sorority Sisters from TABS, GAA Activities, Mixed Chorus, Rainbow Beach, Carl's Hotdogs, Rib Hill, McDonalds on 79th and Yates, Cunis Candies, Melody Lane for ice cream treats, our area Tornado in the '60's and our great snow storm of Jan. 1967. I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion this summer. Even though 50 years have passed, I feel like it all took place just yeaterday. |
