January 29, 1943 capttacker@gmail.com 5034402751 92672 Madison Road Astoria OR US 97103 Tuna boat Captain/EMTI Married 4 Bradwell After SSH I attended Lincoln College in Lincoln, Ill. for a year. I then spend 4 1/2 years in the US Navy; I was stationed at NAS Memphis, NAS Whidbey Island, Wa., Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Ca., and was honorably discharged at NAS Miramar outside of San Diego. I married my 1st wife and had a son and two daughters. My next 8 years were spent as a commercial diver mostly in Calif. I then ran boats all over the North and South Pacific for another ten years. A new phase of my life started and I met my 2nd wife that I've been with for 37 years and we have a great 25 year old son. We purchase a 65 foot offshore racing sailboat and visited most of the Caribbean Islands, the East Coast of the U.S. and ended up in San Francisco with the boat three years later and had to sell it and settle down before we were completely broke. We purchased a tuna boat in 1985 that carries 50 tons of frozen tuna and fished both the North and South Pacific for albacore tuna. We still have the boat to this day. I only fish the boat June through Oct. in the North Pacific with my 4 man crew including my youngest son now. I have been working part time as an Emergency Medical Technician for the same company for almost 20 years during the off fishing season. I have also been a volunteer fireman and Captain for our local fire dept. for many years. We have lived on the Columbia River for over 20 years. I am very thankful to have had a very colorful and exciting life and I'm still alive to tell about it. South Shore High School, The wresting coach Mr. Conforti, sneaking cigarettes during recess, Rainbow Beach, Carl's. I regret missing the reunion; I didn't even know anything about it till I stumbled on this website a short time ago.

April 22, 1943 vlmann@ameritech.net 3123471660 7738716271 644 Webster Chicago IL US 60614 insurance agent Married 1 Horace Mann Vicki and I were fixed up in college and we've been married 44 years. Our daughter, Melissa, lives in DC, and is in charge of legislative affairs for Homeland Security. She is about to have our first grandchild about ten days before the reunion. I hope the baby knows that it can't be late.

I went to the Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management to seek a career in foreign trade. After two years working, I realized that corporate America and me were not a match, and by luck, landed in the insurance business and have been an agent for 42 years. Vicki is a lawyer.
Travel was our main interest anyway, and like many in our class, we've been fortunate to see much of the world, and hope there's more to go.

We live in Lincoln Park, in the heart of the off loop theater district, so we keep very busy. I've finished a combo of seven Chicago and New York marathons - the last one was ten years, some pounds, and two knee surgeries ago. And thanks to classmate Bert Kraft, whose skill saved my sight in one eye.
Mrs. Majors dancing for pennies, Mr. Kelly and the bookroom, Mr. Duban, gooey brownies, the Opener and Closer, Tommies, finally winning the Sing, and the prom. I still play golf at Jackson Park. Maybe once a year, after a round, I'll drive by the house on Merrill. It still looks good. I can see me mowing the lawn.

For those of us lucky enough to be here, we're all playing the back nine now. Some of our classmates only had a chance to play a few holes, or maybe nine, like my oldest friend Julian Scheinbuks, who
had very much been looking forward to this reunion.
Let's hope that we can all play a full eighteen, and that we still have some good shots left in our bag.

October 23, 1943 susanfreyad@aol.com 8474321233 1167 Crofton Avenue N Highland Park IL US 60035 Retired Married 2 Bradwell/Horace Mann Writing a profile for a 50th year high school reunion is a bit mind boggling. How can this possibly be?
For me, high school was, for the most part, idyllic. We had plenty of teachers who were characters – Mrs. Majors, Mrs. Baker, Mr. Williams (who fell asleep in front of the class every day), Miss Von Bremer, but we also had gems. Miss Annan was revered and feared, and I was not one of her favorites (nor was she mine). If she knew that I taught high school English after college, she would be spinning, I’m sure. I can assure you that my teaching did not imitate hers.
A big part of my life in high school was participating in cheerleading. Contact with Betty Lee Feldman, (another character) who was our sponsor continued over more than 3 years. She drove me nuts, but that activity gave me my life-long love of football and basketball, and my teams’ schedules are important!
My college “career” was not a happy stretch of my life. I went to 3 different colleges, changed majors, and generally over studied
and under dated. I did make it through college, graduated with honors, but it was hard won.
After college, I came back home and taught at CVS. I actually loved it there, and I learned a lot about real life. My classroom was on the top floor so I missed seeing the students who had overdosed being carried out of the school on stretchers. We also, from time to time, had to conduct surprise inspection of lockers. I had asked the principal what I should do if I found a gun, and he said, “Take it out of the locker.” REALLY???? Never did find a gun, thankfully. I also had “protection” from the center of the football team who said, “Miss Merlander, any one ever bother you, you just let me know.” Bless his kind soul. You wouldn’t have wanted to mess with him, trust me.
My husband (Marvin) and I had our first date on July 16, 1966. Richard Speck had murdered nurses not far from our Merrill Avenue home and had not been identified or caught. I took one look at Marvin and knew he just couldn’t be the killer! Lucky for me that I opened the door.
We will be married 44 years this summer, and we’re still working at it! We have been extremely lucky having weathered several major illnesses, recovered from a devastating house fire, and the ensuing reconstruction, survived the fall of Arthur Andersen (Marvin had a 35 year career there), and been blessed with two daughters, one of whom, Alyssa (40 years old), works in the field of change management, and our other daughter, Reni (38 years old), was ordained a rabbi in June, 2003. Reni married Aaron Nessel in 2006. Gabriel Solomon Nessel was born June 8, 2010 and has brought great joy into our lives.
Married and moving NORTH(!) caused me to transfer high schools. I was assigned to Von Steuben High School which I also enjoyed. I still have friends from CVS and VS (faculty and students) with whom I keep in touch.
We have lived in Highland Park now for 42 years in three different houses. In 1988, we purchased a little cabin on the other side of the lake in Lakeside, Michigan. It’s only 800 square feet, but it’s a sanity saver.
I loved being a stay-at-home Mom. I probably drove our daughters crazy, but then, what mother doesn’t? Along the way, our family took up camping and that, for the most part, was how we traveled for the next ten years. We’ve since broadened our scope, love to see other countries and in addition, take what is known in the Dickman vernacular as “Ma and Pa hit the back-roads” trips.
While I was an at home Mom, I was extremely active in several organizations: B’nai B’rith Women, Brandeis National Women’s Organization, and of course, the PTO. The presidency of the PTO left a bit to be desired, but the term ended eventually as all terms do, thank goodness.
After my 20 year hiatus at home, a friend offered me a job in the National Office of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School. The Melton program, affiliated with Hebrew University of Jerusalem, teaches set adult Jewish education courses over a two-year span all over the world. I worked for 10 years, met amazingly dedicated educators who enriched my life beyond measure and saw the organization grow from 22 sites to 63 sites when I retired. I’d like to think that I had something to do with that growth. I know that I benefitted a great deal.
Now, Marvin and I are both retired and have “play dates,” i.e. see what we want to see in the Chicago environs. We also have a passion for theater, and I attend classes at the North Shore Senior Center. No tests, no papers, just pure enjoyment on a myriad of subjects with outstanding lecturers.
An important part of my life now is “tripping” with the "South Side Girls." Every year, (since we turned 50) Arlene Boshes Hirschfelder, Joni Rooth Brochstein, Susie Meitus Gottlieb and I go somewhere in the USA. Our conference calls to plan the trips last longer than the trips! There’s nothing like being with long time friends who know your history. I also cherish continuing relationships with other SSHS friends.
It saddens me deeply to see how many in our class have passed on, some of whom were my very dear friends. Truly, the fact of their deaths leaves holes in my heart.
I think I’m fortunate to be happy with my “lot.” I haven’t scaled mountains, haven’t received the Nobel or Pulitzer, but I’ve never been on the police blotter, either.
Do I have woulda’s, coulda’s, shoulda’s? Of course. Doesn’t everyone?
I do know I can’t go home again, and that’s just fine, but I will always be proud that I grew up on the south side of Chicago.

U of I where I met my husband Ira Silverman. Thanks Lesley Zatz. I had the dubious honor of processing the first Medicare claim in the state of Illinois. Yes, we are that old. Along came Michael, who finally married a great girl. and gave us an amazing granddaughter. He and his wonderful wife are expecting a son in December. Next came our daughter Dana, who gave us a grandson and granddaughter, (both amazing as well) along with a great son in law. I now design custom closets and appreciate spending as much time as I can with my family. We are blessed that they all live in the area and that we all like each other. At least I like them.
South Shore was THE perfect place to grow up. Great memories. The bowling alley. Tuesday nights at the Youth Center. Gamma Phi and the Sing. Friday nights at T Hut. Carl's hot dogs for 25 cents. Peter Pan and the Patio. Mitchell's chocolate chip ice cream.(Still buying it) Getting hauled into the office senior year for smoking in my '61 yellow Datsun. The best memory? Winning that '61 yellow Datsun at the Closer. Yay for me!!!

Our daughters Laura and Anne have matured into two splendid young women who now live one block apart in Fort Greene Brooklyn and who both pursue interesting and creative careers in NYC. They have been my life's greatest reward. Liz and I were thrilled during a recent visit with Laura and Anne in Brooklyn to receive the news of Laura's engagement to Weston Wells. They'll marry in September.

Until today I had not been seriously considering attending the reunion feeling that I would prefer to remember my classmates in their prime at 17 or 18 years old rather than the reality of today's 67 and 68 year olds. However, today I received a totally unexpected phone call from classmate Carol Martin and had such a good time talking with her that I may now reconsider.
