abooth94@gmail.com 9176481382 7186434877 66 Orange St Brooklyn NY 11201 Public Relations Married Ray How do you summarize fifty years? I attended Washington U in St. Louis for two years, transferred to Berkeley where I witnessed the Free Speech Movement and Joan Baez singing “We Shall Overcome” on the steps of Sproul Hall, and graduated in Political Science and Spanish. I returned to Chicago and married Steve Gaber, who I had met at Washington U. After a year as an editorial assistant to Mike Royko at the Chicago Daily News, I moved on to reporter at the Lerner Newspapers. Following the 1968 Democratic Convention, I wrote the first editorial ever published in the Lerner Newspapers criticizing Mayor Daley. Two years later, I divorced and spent a year in Europe and Israel writing articles for newspapers and magazines. When I returned, I moved to Washington, D.C. to pursue a career in politics and journalism. There I served as communications director of several organizations, as Press Secretary to Senator Paul Tsongas (D-MA) and wrote a book about women and politics.

In 1984 I was bored with the one dimensionality of life in DC and itching for big city life again, so I moved to New York City, a single woman of 40. For several years, I ran my own public relations firm. In 1994, I was hired as Vice President of Communications at The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), a think tank founded by former HEW Secretary, Joseph A. Califano, Jr. Here I produced high profile national surveys of teens and drugs which were carried by the media around the country and cited in speeches by President Clinton, Speaker Gingrich and by First Lady Hillary Clinton in her book, “It Takes a Village.”

While at CASA, I bought an apartment in Brooklyn Heights and met Steve Lefkowitz, the second Steve I would marry. (See ladies, it is never too late. I was one month shy of 53 when I met Steve.) We were married two years later and I became step mom to Steve’s lovely daughter Laurie (who is now 33 and married with her own step daughter so I have a step-step granddaughter). Steve and I have traveled widely together and recently celebrated our 12th anniversary at our weekend house in the Berkshires.

However, the past few years have been challenging. Out of nowhere – in October 2008 -- I was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia -- a rare and life threatening bone marrow failure disease. Over the past two-and a-half years, I have been treated twice -- first at New York Presbyterian Hospital and again, at the National Institutes of Health (a miraculous place) where I spent 12 days last August participating in a clinical trial of a new drug.

For many months pre- and post- treatment, our lives were turned upside down by the weekly blood and platelet transfusions I required and by my compromised immune system. Thankfully, I am now in remission and no longer need transfusions. We are able to travel again and just returned from a great trip to Berlin and Prague. Like many people who have been through a major illness, this experience has made me more appreciative of every day that I am alive and deeply grateful for the love and support I receive from my amazing husband, family and friends.

From my years at SSHS cannot

Col. Applegran, Miss Annan with the

Col. Applegran's booming

ashub@comcast.net 8476342969 8476342969 1148 Brandywyn Ct Buffalo Grove IL US 60089-1171 Retired University Administrator Married 2 Bryn Mawr Immediately after high school graduation, I went to work for my first of three summers at Arlington Park Race Track, where I collected parking fees from motorists as they entered the race track property. I spent my next two summers at the Chicago Sun-Times, first as a copy boy, then as a communications center clerk, where I was the first person to see all the news as it came across the wires.

I earned a B.S. in psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1965. I earned an M.A. (social psychology) and a Ph.D. (measurement) from Loyola University Chicago in 1968 and 1977, respectively. In between my M.A. and Ph.D. I studied at the L.L. Thurstone Psychometric Laboratory of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In 1968 I married Susan Barasch, a north sider from Amundsen High School; we have two grown children, Jonathan and Deborah.

I have had two careers: corporate and academic. I held a number of management positions at Science Research Associates, Inc. (SRA), then an IBM subsidiary, in Chicago; was Director of the Test Publications Division of Psychological Services, Inc. (PSI) in Los Angeles; and was Vice President and General Manager of a division of National Computer Systems, Inc. (NCS) in Minneapolis. At Northeastern Illinois University, I hold the rank of Professor of Management and have taught Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management. My research has been in the areas of employee honesty, in entrepreneurship education, and most recently in the human resource management contribution to supply chain management. I have served as Chair of the Management and Marketing Department, Coordinator of the MBA Program, Chair of the University Faculty Senate, Associate Dean, and Interim Dean of the College of Business and Management. My current position is Associate Provost, where I serve as university contract administrator regarding all aspects of the collective bargaining agreement with the faculty.

I was the lead author of a published battery of 20 pre-employment selection tests, “The PSI Basic Skills Tests for Business, Industry, and Government.”

I ran in three Chicago Marathons, successfully completing the 1980 Chicago Marathon. In Los Angeles, I ran in a 10-K with Jane Fonda, except that I did not realize that I was standing right next to her before the race. I am a licensed psychologist in the State of Illinois and was also licensed in California and Minnesota.

Recently, I have taken up extracurricular acting, appearing at my university's Stage Center Theatre in "Around the World in Eighty Days" and in "Bleacher Bums."
South Shore (high school and neighborhood) was very special in time and place.

I have good memories of being co-captain of the track team with Bernie Wolfberg (I wish I could find my track letters and my ribbons); being editor-in-chief of The Shore Line newspaper (including a one-on-one interview with George Halas); winning the “Sing”; and memories of Miss Mackie and Miss Justus.

If only I had saved my baseball card collection and my comic books!

Going to the Great Barrier Reef and snorkeling with the fish; seeing the Great Wall of China and going to South Africa for a month and seeing the beautiful wildlife were awesome as was taking a train trip recently from Seattle to Los Angeles. I also just met my Great Grandson Maisen who is a bundle of joy. I love doing charity work with a group of retired Flight Attendants and we raised $25,000 this year for Seeing Eye Dogs.
I love taking pictures of sunsets and sunrises and still am in shock that all these years have gone so fast. I am very fortunate to have wonderful friends and family who care and are loving people in my life. I have had two husband pass away which is very difficult. I decided that just because my name is Alona I didn't have to be alone and so I continue to try to help others who are not as fortunate and to give thanks everyday for how fortunate I am. I enjoy living in Palm Desert California and lived in Seattle for 32years. Palm Desert is a beautiful place to retire and there is so much to do here. I have lots of company in the Winter and even some visitors in the summer. Life is good and going to quickly that is for sure.

Soon afterward, our 3rd son Ben was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Ben died in 2008 at the age of 37, a terrible loss to our entire family. Steve and I have since established ALS WORLDWIDE to assist ALS patients. We've been married for 47 years and have nine amazing grandchildren. Our son Ben's legacy is "Indestructible", an award winning documentary film that continues to be shown worldwide by ALS patients, researchers, physicians and the general public because his documented search for a cure and for meaning for his life, is universal. ALS WORLDWIDE is a non-profit organization that provides support to ALS families internationally through scientific research interpretation, individual patient advocacy and community activism.
